The mission of the college center at Forest Lake Christian School is to assist families in the college planning process by providing guidance and resources. The curriculum at FLCS prepares students for admission to Christian colleges, California State Universities (CSU), the University of California (UC), and other state and private universities.
Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions of a lifetime and our hope is that students will continue in Christian education and choose from among the many excellent Christian colleges and universities. Information and assistance is also available for students choosing a community college, a public university, or an independent college. It is our desire to assist parents and students in making a smooth transition from high school to college.
On average, 90% of Forest Lake Christian School students choose to attend college after graduation. Approximately 65% of our graduates attend a 4 year college and 25% attend a community college. Students have been admitted to UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Pepperdine University, and West Point Military Academy as well as excellent Christian colleges such as Azusa Pacific University, Biola University, and Seattle Pacific University. Each year a few students choose Bible college or mission training before they attend college with organizations such as Capernwray Bible College in England, Bodenseehof Bible College in Germany, and Youth With A Mission.
Parent meetings are held three times each year on the following topics: College Planning, College Admissions, and College Financial Aid. Each family in attendance receives a binder with detailed and extensive information about every aspect of being prepared for college. The college center welcomes parent and student interaction and individual appointments are available throughout the school day and in the evenings.
Forest Lake Christian School students receive thousands of dollars in scholarships each year. The Class of 2010 was awarded over $920,000 in college scholarships. Scholarship amounts ranged from $500 to full tuition scholarships worth over $25,000.
Scholarships are available from three sources: The state and federal governments, the college or university, and private groups such as the Lion’s Club and Chambers of Commerce. Students are offered a financial aid “package” from each college that includes scholarships from each of these sources.
Federal Scholarships: The federal government offers scholarships known as Pell Grants to low income families. Loans are part of financial aid and Stafford Loans are offered to students and PLUS loans to parents. The federal website at www.studentaid.ed.gov offers information on the scholarship and loan programs. To apply for federal scholarships families must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and submit the form electronically between January 1 and March 2 of the senior year.
State Scholarships: The California state scholarships are known as Cal Grants and are awarded through the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). The CSAC website www.csac.ca.gov has detailed information about Cal Grants. Cal Grants are awarded based upon a families’ income and the student’s grade point average. Families must submit a FAFSA form (see above) between and submit a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form between January 1 and March 2.
College Scholarships: Each college or university offers scholarships for academics, leadership, athletics, music, and other accomplisments. College websites list available scholarships or contact the financial aid office of each college.
