Dr. Jean Schoellerman devoted her life to the education of children. The sincerity of this passion was fully realized by the founding of Forest Lake Christian School in 1966.

Through her 48 years of service, Dr. Schoellerman formed and supported the ministry of FLCS, serving as founder, Director of Education, and principal.  Under her leadership, the school was established with a mission to equip students for success through the integration of Biblical truth with quality education.

She set a standard for excellence in private Christian education in Northern California when FLCS became a charter member of the California Association of Christian Schools, which grew into the Western Association of Christian Schools, and is now the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), with a membership of nearly 24,000 schools from over 100 countries. In addition, Dr. Schoellerman led FLCS to become one of the first schools in Northern California to achieve dual accreditation through WASC and ACSI. Because of Dr. Schoellerman’s unprecedented work, she received an honorary Doctor of Education from Shasta Bible College in 2002.

Known for her compassionate character, Dr. Schoellerman was a gracious and strong woman of faith. She was loved and admired by her community and family, as well as the churches and ministries she supported. Dr. Schoellerman stepped into the presence of the Lord on February 14, 2021. She is survived by her husband Willard Schoellerman and a loving family of children, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, many of whom are carrying on the ministry founded by her many years ago.

A life Well Lived

From a young age, Dr. Schoellerman demonstrated a gift for teaching and was actively involved in children’s ministry at her local church. After finishing her degree at San Francisco State University and earning a teaching credential, Dr. Schoellerman worked at various schools, before briefly retiring to raise a family with her husband, Willard Schoellerman. However, Dr. Schoellerman was quickly dissatisfied with the level of education her children received and decided to enter back into the teaching profession.

Forest Lake Christian School was established in 1966 from humble beginnings when Jean Schoellerman decided to home school her children.  As more children desired a Christian education, the Schoellermans established Forest Lake Christian School on March 29, 1970, as a 501(c)(3) corporation for charitable and educational purposes, governed by a board of directors.  The Schoellermans donated the land, privately owned by them, directly to FLCS to be owned by the school indefinitely for the purpose of advancement of education and ministry to the community. The South Campus of the school has also served as the meeting place for Combie Bible Church (now Compass Church), with the Schoellermans’ personally donating financially to the advancement of the gospel through the church.

Dr. Schoellerman faithfully worked as the Director of Education and principal until her retirement in 2014. Many children came to know Christ because of their attendance at FLCS and thousands of families have benefitted through receiving a FLCS education. Dr. Schoellerman’s vision continues today through the ministry and legacy of FLCS.
